Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's death the family, it was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. When she was a child, Ford battled anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted by the word association. Ford started acting in her teens and became an actor in the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days however, Ford realised that this was not the best location for her. Ford decided to apply instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but in the meantime she already had made her TV debut on the 1991 season from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate was a regular performer on stage as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate started to get noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
